Ajaccio Highlights
Maison Bonaparte
Maison Bonaparte stands as the most visited national museum in Corsica. You'll find this large yet simple residence on Rue Saint-Charles in the heart of Ajaccio, where Napoleon Bonaparte was born on August 15, 1769. The Bonaparte family lived in this ancestral home throughout Napoleon's childhood. His father Charles-Marie and mother Letizia raised Napoleon and his siblings here until the family left in 1793.
Ajaccio Cathedral and Key Religious Sites
Ajaccio's religious architecture reflects centuries of Corsican devotion and cultural heritage. The cathedral stands as the city's most significant religious monument, while historic churches throughout the old town preserve the island's spiritual traditions.
Imperial Chapel: Bonaparte Family Mausoleum
The Imperial Chapel (Chapelle Impériale) stands as the final resting place for Napoleon Bonaparte's family in Ajaccio. Napoleon III commissioned this Neo-Renaissance chapel between 1857 and 1859 to honor Cardinal Joseph Fesch's last wishes. The chapel is part of the Palais Fesch complex on Rue Cardinal Fesch.
